Flours with reduced environmental impact: Molini Pivetti and Yara Italia launch a plan to reduce the carbon footprint of the Campi Protetti Pivetti supply chain - Molini Pivetti

The announcement was the focus of the meeting with farmers from the Campi Protetti Pivetti supply chain and envisages a further reduction in CO₂ emissions during the cultivation of soft wheat through the use of Yara Climate Choice™ fertilisers.

Renazzo (FE), 10 November 2025 –Molini Pivetti, Italy’s leading milling company, and Yara Italia, a leader in plant nutrition and sustainable agriculture, are launching a joint plan to reduce the carbon footprint of soft wheat cultivation for more sustainable agriculture.

The announcement was the focus of last Friday’s meeting with farmers from the Campi Protetti Pivetti supply chain, a virtuous model of responsible production that is the pride of Molini Pivetti and the Emilia region, which has always been dedicated to soft wheat cultivation. These fields produce high-quality, 100% Emilian flours, such as Gran Riserva and Da Agricoltura Sostenibile.

The partnership between Molini Pivetti and Yara Italia was signed in 2024. The goal: to improve the sustainability of soft wheat crops in the Campi Protetti Pivetti supply chain through advanced fertilisation practices and innovative digital technologies, while also strengthening ties with farmers.

Thanks to the joint work of Molini Pivetti’s technical team and Yara’s international team dedicated to agronomic research and development, agronomic practices were analysed in the preliminary phase, with particular attention to the use of fertilisers, both through field trials and analysis of historical data from the supply chain.

The results of these initial comparisons led to the definition of a specific, targeted nutritional plan, which involves the use of Yara Climate Choice™ fertilisers as a strategic tool to further reduce the carbon footprint of soft wheat cultivation.

The experimental “pilot” phase is now underway, aimed at implementing the nutritional plan, tailored to the needs of the Campi Protetti Pivetti agricultural supply chain.

The use of Yara Climate Choice™ fertilisers in the pilot project will enable farmers to optimise yields while reducing their environmental impact, and Molini Pivetti to obtain flour with a reduced carbon footprint, an added value that is fully in line with the sustainability path that the company has been pursuing for several years.

The carbon footprint of soft wheat cultivation represents the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted during all stages of the agricultural process, which is around 60%: from the production and use of fertilisers, to fuel consumption for tillage, irrigation, transport and crop residue management.

‘The LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) analysis conducted for each vintage since 2018 has clearly shown that the agricultural phase has a decisive impact on the carbon footprint of Molini Pivetti soft wheat flour production. This has prompted the company to promote more responsible cultivation and strengthen its collaboration with farmers. This led to the creation of the “Campi Protetti Pivetti” (Pivetti Protected Fields) project, a CSQA-certified label that identifies a supply chain that is traced and controlled at every stage, guaranteeing the Italian origin of the wheat and a commitment to agriculture that protects future generations, producing more while preserving the environment. This commitment has also led to strategic partnerships, such as the one with Yara Italia, aimed at implementing increasingly sustainable agricultural practices throughout the supply chain’ explained Alessandro Zucchi, agronomist and supply chain project manager at Molini Pivetti.

‘Launching this project with Molini Pivetti, which has been deeply rooted in Italy for over 150 years, is a source of pride and excitement for Yara,” commented Giulia Castellucci, Yara Italy Supply Chain Relations Manager. “This partnership demonstrates how Yara’s product innovation seamlessly integrates with the tradition of Made in Italy excellence, combining historic expertise and cutting-edge technologies in the agricultural sector. Yara Climate Choice™ fertilizers are an easily implemented tool for achieving the goals of reducing the environmental impact of agri-food supply chains’.

Yara Climate Choice™ fertilisers are the same reliable, high-quality Yara products for crop nutrition, but manufactured using new technologies that further reduce the carbon footprint associated with fertiliser production in the factory, such as the use of ammonia from renewable sources or carbon capture and storage technology. Yara guarantees the validity of the calculations relating to the measurement of the carbon footprint of its products through certification by an independent third party.
